August 14, 1962 – December 7, 2016
“In meo cordo in aeternum” “Forever in my heart”
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Laurie Mark Valpy, on December 7th, 2016, at the age of 54 years. Beloved son of Barbara May Thomson (nee Jamieson), and the late Mark Robert Valpy, (2015). He is the precious brother, brother-in-law and dear friend of Jillan Valpy and David Cook.
Laurie was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, on August 14, 1962. He grew up with his family in Prince George and Revelstoke, graduating high school in North Vancouver in 1981. After living in Vancouver for many years, he moved to Edmonton where he completed his diploma as a Journeyman Baker at NAIT. In 1997, Laurie moved back to the coast, residing in Victoria, BC, to be near his immediate family. Among his many talents in baking and wedding cake decorating, he was an accomplished carpenter and builder, holding many certifications in First Aid. He worked in several bakeries and on many building projects in Victoria, the Gulf Islands and on the lower mainland. Laurie was artistically gifted and was an extremely hard worker who set high standards for himself.
His spirit was full of adventure and he loved to explore new horizons. He was exuberant in living and was in awe at the beauty of nature. He loved anything outdoors, especially hiking, boating, fishing and camping in the lush forests, mountains and waters of the West Coast. He was an excellent skier, enjoyed heli-skiing, and worked his dream job on the volunteer ski patrol team at Apex Mountain. Laurie loved music. He played the trumpet, guitars, keyboards, dabbled in drums, and sang choral music, he was always ready to jam.
Laurie’s humour was unmatched by few. He always had a funny story or joke to tell and had the ability to find humour in the most mundane situations. His laugher, unforgettable and will live on. Laurie was fun, loving, generous, and had a heart of gold. No matter what, he always found the courage to carry on. He longed for family, a home and happiness in his life. Our love and gratitude goes out to family and friends for their compassion and caring. Those who will miss him dearly; aunts, uncles and cousins who’s lives Laurie touched, and his beloved cat, QT. We all loved Laurie and are blessed to have shared in his life.
We will honour Laurie’s memory in a celebration of his life on Thursday, April 13, 2017, at 1:00pm, at Royal Oak Burial Park Chapel, 4673 Falaise Drive, Victoria BC, www.robp.ca. A celebration open house and dinner will follow at the family home of Jillan Valpy and David Cook, at 2862 Austin Avenue, from 4 pm onwards, everyone is welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Laurie’s name to TEEN CHALLENGE, Rehabilitation Services and Retreat at www.teenchallengebc.com.

We became to know Laurie well when he lived In EDMONTON. He always had an encouragement,a story,or a joke to share. He was forever the charmer. He baked the cake for our wedding, and we had lots of fun together. At one time him and I started a drywall, insulation, and poly installation company together, getting paid by the square foot. Man,I never worked so hard for so little in my life. We were only doing it part time, to earn extra money. One day we looked at each other and he cracked we could make more money collecting bottles from ditches. That was the end of our little enterprise. I could not believe the news when I heard it. He will be missed by many.
